Presidential Racism . . . Media Myth or Real?
First to qualify the question, I’m not referring to the 5% of white people that are blinded with racial hatred or the 5% of black people that think the government invented crack to kill off their community . . .
If your old enough, you’ll remember that Colin Powell was a potential Presidential candidate . . . he graciously declined the offer . . . but his name was tossed into the ring several times in the 90’s . . .
So, when you look at the Powell map . . . states like West Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania . . . basically the pro-
Clinton states . . . show Powell winning in a landslide . . .
Again, disqualifying the people who are clearly insane, are the effects of racism on the Presidential election real or media myth?
Racism very probably affects most of us at deep levels within ourselves that we are not even really aware of unless we are very mentally vigilant.
Unless people grow up in a social bubble, it’s very hard not to absorb the effects of the culture and society one grows up in, and racism is a fact in both.
It seems especially divisive in the US (looking from outside), BUT that could just be because Americans are more open and up front about their views than some other places.
You make a good point about the five per cent insane and idiots on either end of the spectrum, BUT that five per cent doesn’t just chop off and then everyone links arms and sings kumbaya together.
There are many people who have mixed views, or have milder forms of racist views ~ the old “Whites (or blacks) are fine people to work and socialise with but I wouldn’t want to marry one” crowd.
I doubt it’s a media ‘myth’, although the media probably stirs it up to keep selling their product with exciting headlines.
To say it does NOT exist outside the fringe element would be a little naive, however, so it is a factor, just as sexism is, just as geographic and class loyalties are … all these things are factors.
To what extent they influence the actual vote, however, is hard to guess. It would be interesting to get some reputable stats, but that would be very hard to do I guess.
